After a few years of planning and SHOPPING Suvo and Damien made a very impromptu decision to go for a hike up the snowy mountains! They of course were well equipped, however, I being 11 weeks pregnant, had about 24 hours notice to decide to go and get organised! I quickly packed in about 20 minutes so we could make it to Anaconda in Wagga with 10 minutes left of open time to buy me some hiking boots after Griffith had nothing available!! Then we stayed the Friday night in a hotel in Tumut.
Next day the boys had organised to drop a ute at one side of the mountain and start form the other side. I had a tiny backpack and Damien and Suvo out did each other on their packs! We got started straight away, with the first creek crossing being 500m down the track. Things escalated quickly! We crossed in out undies!! A very COLD and painful experience. Luckily the rest of the 6 creeks we were expecting were all dried up.
Lots of wild Brumbies about
Hiking through the snow was a highlight
our first stop for lunch of muesli bars
We made it to our 2nd hut where we were to spend the night, apparently this one was haunted, but I didn't want to think about that every time I went out to wee in the frost, trying not to look out into the darkness. I was hanging for some real food, being pregnant and Damien only supplying muesli bars for lunch! We cooked steaks on the fire on salad wraps. While Pipper had packet mac and cheese.
The night was cold! Even though we slept by the fire most of the heat went straight up the chimney. I got up so often to have a freezing wee and bring in some more fire wood. Poor Pipper was coughing very hard all night and ended up finding out she had a chest infection (which we both caught of course and I'm still off work from)
Damien's sleeping bag was too short so he ended up with very cold arms
We woke early for muesli bar brekky, and a shitty black cuppa tea (the milk I packed disappeared) and my hangry side came out. We made it to the other ute and headed on our way to find some snow to play in. I was exhausted form a zero night sleep and not enough food, but had a left over steak wrap and FOUND the milk back in the ute!! Luckily it was below 0 temps and the food was fresh. I enjoyed some brunch while the kids enjoyed the toboggans.
It was a really great trip and I was happy my hip even held out on me, just feeling tight the next day, though my breathlessness was a little annoying and concerning. I don't know when I'll be able to go on another trip like this with a baby on the way, it might be in 5 years when we can take it with us! But its something I'd love for us to do more of. Tasmania next...

Such a great experience, especially being in the snow!! Your pack is tiny compared to even the kids! 😆
It looks a beautiful experience - even though I get the message it was COLD!
Wow Kez, that looked like a fabulous experience!!! Gotta put it on the bucket list.
